My Stint at Koffee With Karan
The year 2018 is a monumental one in my career since I started working as a professional photographer and cinematographer on the sets of Koffee With Karan. I became the first dedicated photographer on the set, and I cannot underplay what that means to me. The pictures clicked by me were shortlisted by the creative heads of Hotstar and Star World for social media and marketing strategies. I extend my appreciation to Jhanvi Obhan on the stellar job she did while directing the episodes for the latest season of KWK.
After graduating in 2014, my first internship was with SOL productions in Bandra. Sol Productions is a part of Banijay Group and has produced high-quality, non-fiction programs as well as live and televised events. Popular shows like Comedy Nights with Kapil, Nach Baliye and Koffee With Karan are just some of the notable names under Sol’s banner. After having worked on a daily show for Disney, I was internally absorbed by the company to work as an Assistant Creative Director for them. Working with production companies is a period of immense learnings as you have to work on multiple shows at the same time. Working on Comedy Nights with Kapil and Miss Diva wasn’t a piece of cake, but there is an excellent method in the madness of making these shows all work the way they do.
Maintaining social connections play a crucial role in your growth. I was in touch with my SOL Production team with whom I had interned, and when I started my work, it was this team that helped me get better opportunities. I will forever be thankful to Jhanvi, the brain behind the content of Koffee With Karan for recognizing my capabilities and giving me the launchpad to showcase my work.
Let’s fast forward to my exhilarating experience on the first-day of KWK. Working with a few similar members of the SOL team gave me some relief and confidence. The first episode that we shot was the TV debut of Sara Ali Khan. She featured on the show with her father, Saif Ali Khan and everyone on the set were all pumped to kickstart the new season. I received a detailed brief about the show after an introduction with Mr Karan Johar. It is crucial to abide by the instructions at first, even if you get an opportunity to correct it later. This reflects immensely on your work ethics, making you stand apart from your contemporaries.
Reiterating the importance of your initial brief can be a challenge. You are restricted to make movements while taking stills because of the multi-camera setup. KWK was shot with six cameras rolling at the same time from different angles, and I had to be precise with my placements and pinpoint the framing of the video cameras.

P.S. Not everyone drinks coffee on the show, most of the celebrities are drinking diet coke.
